Our Lady of Sorrows News

The Most Holy Trinity

June 7, 2009

Go . . . and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. -  Matthew 28:19

THE RESPONSIBILITY OF OUR FAITH

Today is a day simply to ponder the fact that in baptism we were claimed by God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The first reading from Deuteronomy prompts us to fix in our hearts the truth that God is the Lord of both heaven and earth and there is no other god. Saint Paul reminds us that, because we received the Spirit of adoption in baptism, we are now children of God. In the Gospel Jesus charges us with the responsibility to make other disciples. These realities make today’s solemnity a day of praise, adoration, and responsibility. It is a fitting day to thank God for the absolutely free gift of faith that we were given in baptism. It is also a day to ask God for strength to take on the responsibility of sharing that faith with others.

New Principal for OLS Parish School
Mrs. Willhite will be visiting our parish school on Monday this week.  She will also attend our Parish Pastoral Council meeting on Tuesday evening and visit the 10:30 a.m. English Mass and the 5:00 p.m. Spanish Mass next Sunday.
  • An Appreciation Reception – Mrs. Barbara Pettit, the Principal of our parish school, is retiring next month after many years devoted to Catholic education, especially through her years at OLS as a teacher (12 years) and as Principal these last 8 years.  We will have a reception for Mrs. Pettit on Sunday, June 7th, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the school cafeteria.  We invite all parishioners, students and teachers (past and present) whose lives have been influenced by Mrs. Pettit to come by and thank her and wish her well in retirement.  If you would like to help with the reception, please call the Parish Office.
  • CBHS will host five soccer camps this summer for boys and girls ages 5-14. Camps will be May 25-29, June 1-5, June 8-12, June 15-19, June 22-26;  from 9 am- 12 noon each week. Cost is $100.00 per week. For more information, please call Coach Rogerio Lima at 261 49 66 ext 3038, e-mail rlima@cbhs.org or visit www.cbhs.org/rlima.
  • Attention All Candidates For Confirmation – Confirmation is scheduled at 7:00 p.m. on May 28 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
  • Attention First Communicants and Parents – All those making their First Holy Communion this year are required to participate in a series of three special classes on Saturday mornings.  At least one parent must also attend each session with their child(ren) for their own catechesis from Fr. Timby about the meaning of the Eucharist and its importance in our lives.  These classes begin on May 30 and continue on June 6 and June 13.  First Communion is June 14.
  • First Penance All students who are to make their First Holy Communion on June 14th must participate in the First Celebration of Penance with Confession on Thursday evening, May 14th at 7:00 p.m.  All children must be accompanied by their parents and must be at the church BEFORE 6:45 p.m.
  • First Holy Communion – We will celebrate First Holy Communion at the 10:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday, June 14th, the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi).  We will conclude that Mass with our First Communicants leading the Corpus Christi Procession and Benediction over Frayser from the steps  in front of the church across the driveway.  Everyone is invited to participate.
  • Fathers’ Day – Sunday, June 21, is Fathers Day.  You can have your father, living or deceased, remembered in the holy sacrifice of the Mass on that day by using he envelopes in the pews.  Please be certain to PRINT your fathers’ names so that we get them correct in the bulletin.  Also, if your father is deceased please put a “+” next to his name.  Remember, there is no greater gift we can give than the gift of Christ’s own sacrifice on Calvary re=resented in a bloodless fashion in the celebration of Mass.
  • Vacation Bible School – “Paul and the Underground Church” is the theme of this year’s Vacation Bible School to be held, June 22-24, at OLS.  We are in need of 10 adult volunteers to portray craftsmen and artisans in the booths of the Roman Forum each of the four nights.  Costumes will be required.  The characters needed are wreath makers, leather craftsman, animal sacrifice proprietor, as well as seven others.  Please contact Brenda Plessinger or the Parish Office if you would like to help our young people on their journey of faith during this Year of St.Paul.  There will be a planning meeting on Thursday, May 7, at 6:30 p.m.
  • Baby Shower - Nine months ago, we adopted yet-to-be born babies in our Spiritual Adoption Program. We have prayed for these babies with their presence on the altar at every celebration of Mass. It is time to welcome them into the world. We will have our Baby Shower on the Weekend of July 11 & 12. Every household is asked to bring baby items to Mass that can be presented to Birthright of Memphis to assist young mothers who have made the decision, often difficult in our times, to carry their babies to term rather than terminate their pregnancies. A large basket will be placed in front of Mary’s altar in which you can place your gifts ( no need to wrap them). There will also be a small basket to receive monetary donations.

  • Youth Group Summer Project
The OLS youth group is teaming up this summer with St. Williams and a youth from Chicago, IL to clean up some areas of Frayser as a mission project.  We will be staying in the gym with our out-of-town guests and need money to fund the week with food and incidentals.

GENUINE FREEDOM

People thirst for genuine inner freedom. They yearn for the life which Christ came to give in abundance.
